In early 2025 a bushfire came close enough to the farm that we packed the car. Three months later I went back into the burnt bush and painted it, acrylic straight onto the wood, both sides, standing in the country it was about. Back at Sailors Falls I finished them with gold leaf and wax. They're small and heavy and made to stand rather than hang, so both sides get seen.

The biggest of the blocks. One side: a grey track running up between two burnt slopes to a white sky, black trunks either side, three red flames still going, and fallen timber along the edges laid in gold leaf with red under it. The other side: the morning after — a red ridge under blue and white, three gold trunks with their shadows going off black across pale ground, and a scatter of gold spots on the red where things are coming back. Signed and dated on the side.

Size: 19 × 25.5 × 2.5 cm — double-sided block.

Medium: Acrylic, gold leaf and wax on reclaimed timber.
