In early 2025 a bushfire came close enough to the farm that we packed the car. Three months later I went back into the burnt bush and painted it, acrylic straight onto the wood, both sides, standing in the country it was about. Back at Sailors Falls I finished them with gold leaf and wax. They're small and heavy and made to stand rather than hang, so both sides get seen.

One side: five black trunks on a maroon slope, their shadows falling down the hill in gold leaf, a red edge along the top of the rise, grey rocks in the front with the ground gone red between them, and blue cloud in the gaps at the top. The other side: a burnt hill spotted all over with gold, a black tree with its branches still on, three black trunks with theirs gone, and the ground red with grey stones under a white cloud. Signed and dated on the side.

Size: 15.5 × 24.5 × 2.5 cm — double-sided block.

Medium: Acrylic, gold leaf and wax on reclaimed timber.
