In early 2025 a bushfire came close enough to the farm that we packed the car. Three months later I went back into the burnt bush and painted it, acrylic straight onto the wood, both sides, standing in the country it was about. Back at Sailors Falls I finished them with gold leaf and wax. They're small and heavy and made to stand rather than hang, so both sides get seen.

One side is the day the sky came back — pale blue with a white cloud in it, gold trunks with the char still showing through as black marks, a red band of ridge behind and mauve ground in front, three short gold posts on the right throwing black shadows. The other side is the night before: black ground, purple sky, six gold trunks dotted red up their length, two red flames in the branches, a burst of white where something's still burning, and gold on the rocks at the bottom. Signed and dated on the side.

Size: 13 × 14.5 × 2.5 cm — double-sided block.
